Blogger redirecting Blogspot.com to Blogspot.in domain for blogs in India

Blogger from today redirecting all Blogspot.com to Blogspot.in domain for every blogs in India. If you are an INDIAN user and gone through mine blog or of yours you must have noticed it in the url. If you have not just look around once!

Google owned Blogger had made this change from today. So when ever a user in INDIA try to visit the blogs that are of INDIANS they will be redirected from Blogspot.com to Blogspot.in domain. While for rest of the world, it will not be get redirected. For example considered below for mine blog.

The original url of page : http://rajeevkumarsinghblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/blogger-redirecting-blogspot-domain-in.html

This is the redirected page url : http://rajeevkumarsinghblog.blogspot.in/2012/01/blogger-redirecting-blogspot-domain-in.html

First only INDIAN user will noticed the  Blogspot.in domain url for your every posts. Rest will still have  Blogspot.com in the url. Blogger had precisely redirecting all url so that they do not end up with 404 error for any post. Most of the user even will not noticed the changes at the moment but, they will comes to now slowly. There is no changes been for those who own the custom domain for the blogger's blog.

What are the Problems?
  • Problem in SEO: If you getting linked with  Blogspot.com then in INDIA it will redirected to Blogspot.in, but same is not true for Blogspot.in links. So Blogspot.in url will be visible to INDIAN user only and if user from other countries try to visit through  the link it will show errors. Hence a bit of problem in  for SEO.
  • Alexa rank problems: Since you will have two different url for the same blog, the traffic will surely divides and might you will lose you Alexa ranks. Both the url (  Blogspot.in and  Blogspot.com) will have diffrent alexa ranks, surel the rank of  Blogspot.com will drops.
  • Social Sharing problem: Since Now url is changed offcourse, if a user in INDIA share it on social media sites it will be Blogspot.in url and those who share and are out of INDIA will share  Blogspot.com url. Hence say, your Facebook likes or Tweeter counts will be not added for both url to merge as one, they will have separate counting. This problem will for all the sharing site site including Google Plus, Diggs, Stumbles etc.
  • Problem with Search Engines: This change of having two url for same post will have negative expression on Search engines. Even if Google didn't make any changes as they own Blogger( which they are suppposed to be doing) other like Bing and Yahoo will not favour.
  • Problem of interlink: Some time it would be difficult for a blogger if he didn't precisely works while posting the interlinks in the posts. He might linked the url with  Blogspot.in, which will be visible by INDIAN only and rest will see an error. Quite frustrating!
  • Page Loading Speed: I had seen the page loading take more time then it was way before. I might think this problem will not be there anymore.
Any Solution?
There is no solutions for these problem. They can only solve by Google if they withdraw this change. However, in user's part they can view the original Blogspot.com by adding /ncr. which is suggested by Digital inspiration's Amit Agarwal.
Example : http://rajeevkumarsinghblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/google-developed-android-apps-are-most.html/ncr
But question is will user bother to do this? I feel they will not.
Another thing he added, to have the following link in the templates between the closing and opening head tags.
<link expr:href="data:blog.url" rel="canonical"/>
But having this will only prevent search engines problem but waht about others???? Google need to think and bring with some better idea to make sure all blogger get happy. Put your comments and let me know what you think about it.

  1. Can this change be in some way linked to pressure to Google, FB, Youtube, etc. from Indian government to censor some blogs? Or may be their lawyers have suggested it to prevent future problems with Indian Govt.?

    1. I too was confused. I tried each and every browsers i had in my system but i didn't able to get it. Later i got to know about this.

Hey while copying and pasting the url you should remove .in from it, replace the same with .com

  3. Nicely outlined post and very comprehensive. Couple of issues that I came across. The /ncr can be applied to the home page and for that browser session, all the pages will show up as .com. This is helpful when copying links from the address bar in order to promote the posts. There will be a major problem with sharing links by others, since that is how much of the blog traffic is generated, since they will link to domain-specific URLs that they are seeing. This will effectively be a dead link for viewers from other countries. Alexa issues you have pointed out already, but there is a problem with that too. I have a feeling that these redirects are to virtual pages, since Alexa does not recognize the page. If it does, it will either give a NA or a rank, but instead what it is doing is giving a default rank for the htt://blogspot.in page. Finally, toolbars with sharing features like StumbleUpon and Digg will not work. You can find more of my thoughts at http://subhorup.blogspot.com/2012/01/blogspot-url-redirect-country-domain.html Don't worry, the link works, but willl redirect you to the .in URL.

    1. Subhorup Dasgupta I had tried in myblog you can apply /ncr with any of the post and not only home page. Yeah it true that it works only for the session of browsing in which you used the trick of having /ncr in the url.

The problems i already illustrated they are the major problems like alexa rank etc. My blog with .in domain is having ranked too much which has decreasing now but the same is getting opposite for .com since most of vistors are from INDIA.

Few problems that are not general and not be for all like submitting post to Indivine and similar other. It would be hard for INDIANS to deal with those problem as most of us are not professional bloggers.

    2. It is too much annoying to use /ncr, even didn't work well all the times. I prefer let the blog be what it is ! Why to do silly things????

  6. There is no need for the users to use ncr in the url, they won't have any impact on this, the main problem will be in SEO.

    1. It is not needed for user as they looking for information and not working for the blog writer. But, ncr can prevent redirection for the particular session. The problem of SEO, yes it will be there along with other.

  7. Hey Saurabh you need to give the .com domain as your url or just apply through the blogger's monetized setting page, then no need to get confused.

  14. Hi Rajiv,

Shall i build link in .com or .in, so I can get juice of back links. Apart from Alexa ranking, there is wide difference between no. of links. Please suggest, while building link for site which extension needs to be used?
Furthermore, Even i tried in singapore where it is redirecting to .sg.

Secondly, I have new blog and am thinking to change it own domain name instead of blogspot. In such case, will my .com domain redirect to .in as per recent blogspot redirection.

    Please reply
